What is a Certified Nurse Aide?

A Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) plays a vital role in long-term care settings, serving as the foundation of daily resident support and quality of life. CNAs work closely with nurses and healthcare teams to provide hands-on assistance with essential activities such as bathing, dressing, eating, mobility, and personal hygiene. They are often the caregivers who spend the most time with residents, forming meaningful relationships and providing not only physical care but also emotional comfort and companionship. Beyond basic care, CNAs observe and report changes in residents’ health or behavior, ensuring that nurses and physicians can respond quickly to any emerging needs. This career is ideal for individuals who are compassionate, patient, and attentive—people who find purpose in making a tangible difference in the lives of others. For many, becoming a CNA is also a first step into a broader healthcare career, offering valuable experience, stable employment, and the opportunity to grow within the long-term care field.
